Digital Baggage: It Follows

If any of you are familiar with the horror movie It Follows (I personally have never seen this movie), I'm sure the technological version would entail your digital baggage.

Digital baggage, in more professional terms your digital profile, is something that extends past just the technological world. Even though this is a profile online, its effects resonate with your daily realistic life. To put it short, it literally follows you everywhere you go. It can affect your career, personal life, and the lives of your family and friends. This article particularly showcases 6 reasons how employers seek the online profiles of their applicants and how it affects their overall application to the job. It offers specific regulations that people should abide by in order to not jeopardize the possibility of being accepted in their new position. The 6 key pieces of advice are:

  • be mindful of inappropriate/provocative posts
  • lack of professionalism
  • poorly demonstrated communicative skills
  • any type of drug/alcohol use
  • lack of authenticity of your stated qualifications
While these tips may appear to be common sense, a lot of people take advantage of the quick and effortless convenience of posting, completely disregarding these thoughts. Maintaining a positive and professional online profile is key to landing future opportunities that may arise.

Talking about your digital portfolio, another key term for it is digital footprint . Your digital footprint is ultimately an accumulation of all your digital postings. These "footprints" include postings from all over the Internet, from various different types of platforms. It's important to remain consistent and authentic when establishing your digital footprints across the Internet. Remember, this is ultimately a reflection of who you are, not only as a person but also as a personal brand. The article encourages users to utilize the Web to positively promote themselves and their accompanying thoughts and ideas. Always remember that your online identity, just like in real life, can also be faked. Hence, why it is important to maintain professionalism and realism as much as possible.

Another article explains the importance of monitoring your digital footprints and how its effects can be either detrimental or beneficial to your career. It adds the benefit of monitoring your privacy settings on your different accounts. Privacy settings are very important to maintaining account safety and the content that you put out. Another way to monitor yourself and your digital profile/footprints is to simply Google yourself. This gives you an idea of what future employers, or anyone for that matter, can find upon searching your name. There are other ways that require different digital tools, but Google checking yourself is the simplest way. Also, it is important to be mindful of check-ins and geo-tagging. These activities monitor your location and can give out more detail than necessary.

For safety purposes, a neat website that you can visit is called haveibeenpwned.com . This website allows you to check to see whether or not your email was involved in numerous database breaches. In these breaches, hackers may have gained access to your personal information such as email, password, physical address, SSN, etc. The severity of the information that was hacked can be detrimental to your online profile. Using this website regularly will help you see whether or not your email has been breached. Closely monitoring this will allow you to protect your information as much as possible.

Another important lesson that we learned in class was the formatting of the APA Style. This particular style is used mainly in the social sciences. This particular style of writing is centered around research, thus requiring credible peer-reviewed material. The main difference, formatting wise, between APA and MLA format is the structure. APA is divided into 4 main parts: title page, abstract, body, and references. There are also required headers that are to be placed at the very top of each page. The video done by the Stockton University Writing Center goes into detail about how each particular part is structured with the following information. Because APA Style is primarily based on research, finding credible articles is crucial to a success paper. The video introduces the Stockton Database and how to search for such articles. One of the important parts of the video is the proper use of in-text citations. Citation formatting can be rather difficult, so it is important to pay attention to the little details that are involved with citing. For more detail about APA Style that is not in video form is PurdueOwl. This website thoroughly breaks down the sections and details of what is required. It even offers a full sample APA Style paper for you to look at for reference.

Lastly, Chapter 6 of Ivester's book LOL...OMG! discusses one's consciousness when posting content on the Web. One important perspective that he mentions that I feel like many people forget to consider is "...that to truly become a conscious creator of content, you must consider not only the personal consequences of your digital decisions, but also their effect on others". Personally, I feel that many people are so focused on themselves and how certain things may affect their image, but they forget the image and feelings of other people as well. You really want to consider all aspects before posting content, and that is what Ivester chooses to bring to the spotlight in this chapter. By answering the "Why"s behind the content that is being posted, a lot of senseless pictures and information would not be posted if we just took the time to ask ourselves that simple question. If the reason behind the post is not beneficial to your overall purpose, then it is best not being posted. The other aspect that is to be considered is the timing of the post and how such information can be sensitive according to the type of post that is being created. All of these are to be considered when thinking about the intentions of the post that is about to be published. Again, Ivester emphasizes the importance of building and creating a positive personal brand, one that will further enhance future opportunities with employers and other businesses. The driving questions of 'why', timing, private vs. public, etc. really allow the individual to think "How is this information going to benefit my personal online profile? How will this further me in my career and in other future opportunities?" All of these are important to ponder before creating content in the digital world.

Content Curation

When it comes to the Internet, there are endless possibilities. You can pretty much find every single thing you can ever think of, whether it'd be a traditional article, a video of your favorite celebrity, or even ideas for your next interior design project. The point is, no matter how simple or complex, there is bound to be something on the Internet about it. The content is quite grand, to say the very least. But what happens when you, as an author of some sort, run out of your own ideas? What happens when you feel like you've exhausted all possible ideas within a particular topic? The answer to that lies within content curators. Content curation is the exact process of finding related articles to the field of interest. It is such a helpful tool when trying to search for and organize material. There are several tools available that help with content curation, but one in particular that we discussed about in class is Paper.li . This particular type of content curation esse

Creating Your Own Websites

It's no doubt that creating your own website opens numerous opportunities for you as an individual. Whether your website is based on your business or a personal creative outlet like a blog, it acts as being a main part of your digital footprint. It's essentially your world in the technological universe. Of course, the first step to creating your own website is to find an appropriate host. This article  goes into further detail about the specific steps needed in order to develop a website. I really like how the article lays out the general aspects of a website such as establishing a proper domain name, the types of pages you want to have on your website, as well as even maintaining the information so that it stays current as much as possible. While establishing a website may seem intimidating, it really simplifies the process as much as possible, while still presenting the viewer with options (such as various host sites). Going off of choosing between the various website
